‘Beloved’ actress dies after health battle as family pay emotional tributes to star
The veteran actress who has died aged 83 enjoyed decades on screen and had appeared in over 100 films during her career. Her son announced her passing with a “heavy heart”

A beloved actress has died at the age of 83.
Veteran star Vangie Labalan, whose real name was Maria Cristina Labalan, had been battling an illness prior to her death and had been admitted to hospital. She died surrounded by her loved ones, her family have confirmed.
Her passing was announcedby her son Carlo Labalan who paid a touching tribute on social media. He wrote: “With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Vangie Labalan (Ma. Christina Bonghanoy Labalan).
“She passed away today in Australia due to illness, surrounded by those dearest and nearest to her heart. Her memories will forever remain in our hearts.
“To everyone who [knows] her, [loves] her, and was touched by her kindness, we extend our deepest gratitude. She is deeply loved and will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. She will be coming home soon,” he said.
He provided details of her funeral plans and thanked the public for their messages of condolence, adding: “Further details regarding her wake and funeral services will be shared in the coming days. Thank you for your prayers, love, and support during this difficult time.”
The actress’ niece Van-van Aligam, who affectionately referred to the star as Ma, also paid tribute in a Facebook post on Thursday (February 12). She wrote: “Ma, how is this because the stone is not yours? I’m glad you passed peacefully.
“Surrounded by family. Act the end, you’re going to be a bit too late. We love you, Mom. Rest easy.”
She penned another lengthy tribute to the star, writing: “If there’s a lot of sadness in my life, there’s only one Sabbath. You made me talk. Period.
“I am proud to act because it bleeds in my blood. Has a right! Thank you, Ma. Because of you, we are not able to control actors and showbiz life.
“Because of you I earned my voice. The workshops were worth it. You are the promoter of Australia to all of us. That’s why we’re here.
“Thank you for being our automatic pulian sa Manila. Thank you for helping us get where we are. In support. For the encouragement that someone brings hikay. If it’s dawn, it’s the end. We miss you already. We love you,” she ended her heartfelt message.
Vangie began her career working in radio from 1962 before moving into television and film. She rose to prominence for her breakout performance as Aling Saling in the critically acclaimed 1982 film Himala.
She appeared in over 100 movies throughout her career alongside TV work, voice acting and coaching. Her last movie was the 2023 horror flick Mallari.
