Tony Maudsley has confirmed he’s signed a new contract to stay on the ITV soap

Coronation Street star Tony Maudsley has confirmed he’s signed a new contract to stay on the long-running show for another year – and fans think it’s ‘brilliant news’.

Fans of the ITV soap know that the actor is currently best known for playing George Shuttleworth, having made his debut back in 2020.

He was revealed to be the son of Archie Shuttleworth, a local undertaker who ran Shuttleworth’s Independent Funeral Directors on Tile Street, which George is now in charge of following his father’s passing, and he was later joined in Weatherfield by his sister, Glenda Shuttleworth.

And taking to social media on Sunday (March 1) night, Tony was seen raising a glass of fizz as he confirmed his time on the cobbles had been extended for another year.

Sharing a picture of him looking dapper in a shirt and suit jacket as he beamed for the camera with a glass in hand, the soap star told his followers: “New contract? Cheers Corrie, don’t mind if I do. (I bit their hand off!)Can’t wait to see what’s around the corner for George (aside from more corpses).”

And fans were quick to respond. @nancyfielding said: “Yay! So happy for you, Tony. And for us! Now, let’s have George rescue Todd and help him get his life back, shall we?” @ruby_thompson_actor wrote: “You play one of the best characters on the cobbles for sure!” @xjeankellyx commented: “This is brilliant news and well deserved. Congratulations Tony looking forward to seeing more of George and Todd this year and of course more of George and Christina.”

@t_r_quercus replied: “Yay! Nobody is taking my George away!” @txhlfan shared: “Congratulations from Texas. This is great news.” @angela.holton.10 posted: “Love George’s character on Corrie look forward to it, also you look very dapper, congratulations.” @alisonh1976 penned: “Well done, well deserved. Love George.” @sairs_x added: “Brilliant! Wouldn’t be the same without you!”

It comes after Tony and his co-star Amy Robbins were heard opening up about their new partnership on the cobbles, which comes after knowing each other for 25 years. Amy reprised the role of Christina Boyd in Weatherfield last summer. The character was last seen on the cobbles earlier in 2025, after being double-crossed by her daughter, Daisy Midgeley.

Christina’s latest return to Weatherfield came shortly after George was left heartbroken by his former partner, Eileen Grimshaw, who called time on their relationship before leaving for Thailand. And the pair were soon seen hitting it off, and have been loved-up ever since.

And Tony and Amy are already imagining wedding bells for their characters. “We’ve already planned their wedding day!” Tony told Inside Soap. “I want something to go wrong like there being a problem with the wedding car, and Christina has to go to the ceremony in a hearse.”

Amy added: “Or the florist hasn’t turned up and I have to grab some flowers from the undertakers, so I’m walking up the aisle holding a wreath saying ‘Nan’ or something! Things go wrong but they end up happy, drunk and dancing.” Tony shared: “It would be a funny, heartwarming and riotous wedding,” before adding: “‘Chrissie Shuttleworth’ sounds like a proper Corrie character, doesn’t it?”
