India’s T20 World Cup hero Sanju Samson credits his ex-Delhi Police Constable dad’s four words that help him handle pressure in tough match situations
Sanju Samson delivered a masterclass under pressure at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on March 1. The right-handed wicket-keeper batsman steered the India national cricket team into the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after delivering a scintillating 97. The calculated yet fearless innings led to a thrilling five-wicket triumph over the West Indies cricket team, keeping India’s title defence firmly on track. The knock drew widespread admiration, with supporters hailing Samson’s stint as one of his finest match-winning performances on the global stage.
Strict upbringing shaped Sanju Samson’s confidence
Amid the widespread praise and celebration, an old video of Sanju Samson’s interview with spin bowling legend Ravichandran Ashwin is once again being widely circulated on social media. In the candid interaction, Samson talked about how a strict upbringing in his childhood years helped him grow into a confident player today. The credit goes to his father, Samson Viswanath, a former Delhi Police personnel.
According to Sanju Samson, his parents ensured that their child was committed to his sport as well as being disciplined and humble, and who respects his seniors. The advice was imparted to him and his siblings equally. The cricketer revealed that his father was a part of the Delhi police, during which he grew up in a ‘tight’ and regulated set-up, following his father’s words, ‘90 per cent of the time.’
Parental lessons behind Sanju Samson’s success
Reflecting on his journey, Sanju Samson said that the lessons and values instilled by his parents gave him a strong foundation in life. In fact, their guidance continues to help him be the best version of himself, reinforcing confidence and courage. He emphasised that succeeding as a sportsperson in India demands certain defining traits, with self-belief taking the top spot. Sharing an anecdote, the wicketkeeper-batted added how, as kids, he and other young South Indian boys would sometimes appear ‘meek’ on the field while playing.
Sanju Samson’s father, however, was quick to correct any dip in body language, constantly reminding them to carry themselves like leaders and play with authority. The early conditioning was firmly embedded in his mindset as the message to stay assertive and confident was repeatedly reinforced during his formative years. According to the sportsman, it was a lesson he believes still influences his approach to the game today.
Touted as a prodigious talent early in his career, Sanju Samson rose to fame through domestic cricket and the IPL, earning praise for his elegant stroke play and composure. However, there were periods when critics questioned his temperament and ability to convert promising starts into match-defining knocks. Yet, every setback appeared to deepen his resolve as he continued refining his skills, leading from the front in franchise cricket, and patiently waiting for opportunities, gradually reshaping the narrative around his career.
