A father in China was left heartbroken after his son scored only 6 out of 100 in a maths exam, even after he had spent a whole year personally tutoring him. The emotional moment, captured on video, was shared on Chinese social media, and the Internet can’t stop talking about it.
The story is from Zhengzhou, Henan province, where the father had been coaching his son in Maths every single day for a year. He even stayed up late at night to make sure his child shines in exams. But all his dedication came crashing down when his son handed over his scorecard – 6/100.

What Exactly Happened
In the viral clip, earlier shared by Qilu Evening News on Weibo, the devastated father is seen wiping away tears with his T-shirt before grabbing a towel. At one point, he is even heard saying, “I don’t care anymore, my efforts are wasted, let him struggle by himself!” His wife, who was seemingly filming the moment, couldn’t help but giggle in the background.
The most shocking part for the father was not just the “6 marks” but the drastic drop in performance. The boy had previously scored between 40–50 marks and even achieved 90 once. Ironically, his grades sank to an all-time low after being personally taught by his father, as earlier reported by Taiwanese media ET Today.
Internet Is Divided
As the clip spread across platforms, netizens were quick to react, and opinions were divided. Many questioned the father’s teaching skills, doubting his proficiency in the subject and believing that the poor score could also be due to his limited knowledge, while others pointed out that academic failure in one subject does not guarantee success in life. A user wrote, “I wonder if the Dad was teaching him the right thing.” Another chimed in, “Maybe dad isn’t good at math.”
Others looked at the bigger picture, as one comment read, “Oh, not good in Maths doesn’t mean you cannot succeed in life. Maybe he needs some other way to learn?” Someone else added, “Grades don’t mean anything, except in this case it kinda does.”
The video is a reminder that while parents can guide and support, children need space to grow at their own pace.
