A shocking incident at a glamorous movie premiere in Singapore ended in a short prison sentence for an Australian man who grabbed and planned a attack against pop superstar Ariana Grande.

Johnson Wen, 26, was sentenced to nine days in jail after being found guilty of causing a public nuisance during the Asia premiere of ‘Wicked: For Good’ last Thursday. The incident captured in viral social media videos showed Wen jumping over barricades, rushing at a surprised Grande, and grabbing her shoulders while jumping up and down.

Social media in Singapore was soon buzzing with outrage, with many calling for Wen’s arrest and deportation. The man is no stranger to such stunts. He has a history of interrupting concerts and high-profile events.

The incident also touched a sensitive chord because of Grande’s past. The singer and actress has been open about the trauma she suffered following a 2017 suicide bombing at her Manchester concert which tragically killed 22 people and injured hundreds.

During Wen’s trial on Monday, the court learned that he had attempted to intrude on the premiere twice. After the first grab, actress Cynthia Erivo, Grande’s co-star, quickly intervened and pulled him away, while security staff escorted him out. Wen then tried a second time to breach the barricades. This time, security held him firmly until the situation was under control.

Despite the severity of his actions, Wen posted videos of the incident online afterward, thanking Grande and claiming he was “free.” Singaporean police acted swiftly arresting him the following day. He later pleaded guilty to the public nuisance charge.

Wen appeared in court without a lawyer and told the judge that he would not repeat his actions. Singapore law allows penalties of up to three months in prison, fines up to S$2,000 (roughly £1,167 or $1,537), or both for public nuisance. In this case, the court handed him a nine-day sentence.

Meanwhile, Ariana Grande has not publicly commented on the situation. She continued her appearances at events in Los Angeles over the weekend.
