MANILA, Philippines — Filmmaker Jun Robles Lana announced that his historical thriller “Sisa” has won the Best Screenplay award at the Fantasporto International Film Festival in Portugal, marking another international recognition for the Philippine film.

In a social media post, Lana shared the news with supporters and encouraged audiences in the Philippines to continue watching the film while it remains in cinemas.

“Just got the word: Sisa won Best Screenplay at Fantasporto in Portugal!” Lana wrote.

“It’s an honor for our team to see this story recognized on an international stage, but the most meaningful part of the journey is bringing this win back home,” he added.

The director also urged local audiences to support the movie during its theatrical run.

“We are still in cinemas this week, and I’d love for you to catch it on the big screen while you can,” Lana said.

“If you love stories that stick with you, please give Sisa a chance. Let’s show the world that our stories have a home in our own theaters,” he added.

“Sisa,” written and directed by Lana, stars screen icon Hilda Koronel in her first film in 13 years, marking her return to the big screen after a lengthy hiatus.

Set in 1902 during the closing years of the Philippine-American War, the historical thriller follows the lives of Filipino women navigating life under American occupation.

The film also features performances from Eugene Domingo, Jennica Garcia, Tanya Gomez, Angellie Sanoy and Romnick Sarmenta.

While the title references the tragic mother from José Rizal’s novel Noli Me Tángere, the film is not a direct adaptation, instead drawing inspiration from the character’s cultural symbolism.

“Sisa” previously had its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia in November 2025 before continuing its international festival run.
