The war drama, earlier referred to as Battle of Galwan, will now be called “Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace.” The announcement was made by Salman Khan Films along with the release of a new poster carrying the line “May War Rest in Peace.” The film is directed by Apoorva Lakhia and being starred by Chitrangda Singh along with Salman Khan.
Galwan movie new title
The title change was announced by Salman Khan Films while sharing the film’s new poster. The phrase “May War Rest in Peace” appears prominently, indicating that the story may explore the emotional and human impact of war rather than presenting only a military narrative.
The film draws inspiration from the Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops in 2020. However, people associated with the project suggest that the makers want to frame the story in a broader context, focusing on the cost of conflict while also highlighting the importance of peace.
The announcement quickly sparked reactions online. Many social media users welcomed the phrase “May War Rest in Peace,” calling it a strong and thought-provoking message. Others said the new title gives the film a distinct identity compared with the earlier working name.
Galwan Movie: What was the title controversy?
The project had earlier drawn attention when it was being referred to as Battle of Galwan. Questions were raised during a media briefing about whether the Ministry of External Affairs had any concerns about the film.
Responding to the query, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified the government’s position and said the ministry had no role in matters related to filmmaking.
He said, “We understand that a film of this nature is being planned. Issues regarding filmmaking in India, as you are well aware, are looked after by relevant authorities. And as far as we are concerned, MEA has no role in this or such ventures.”
Galwan movie Story
The war drama will see Salman Khan portray Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, the Indian Army officer who was martyred during the Galwan Valley clash while defending Indian territory. He served in the 16 Bihar Regiment and was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest gallantry honour.
The clash took place on June 15, 2020, in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley. Twenty Indian Army personnel lost their lives in the confrontation, which triggered a serious strain in relations between India and China.
In February 2021, China acknowledged that five of its military personnel were killed in the incident, though several reports suggested the number could be higher.
Galwan, Maatrubhumi Release Date
A teaser for the film was released on December 27, 2025, coinciding with Salman Khan’s 60th birthday. The video received mixed reactions from viewers on social media.
Along with Salman Khan, the film also stars Chitrangda Singh in a key role. With the new title now confirmed, “Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace” is set to release in theatres on April 17, 2026. However, there were also reports that the film may be postponed for August 14 release but there has been no official confirmation about the same.
