Thomas Tuchel Left Harry Maguire out of England World Cup Squad Over Ego
A report has emerged revealing the real reason why Thomas Tuchel has not selected Harry Maguire in his England World Cup squad.
Tuchel names his 26-man England party for this summer’s World Cup at 10am (UK time) on Friday. On Thursday, a series of leaks surfaced, including his decision on Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has been influential in his side’s Champions League qualification this season.
The German boss has seemingly made several big calls regarding his squad ahead of the team being officially announced.
One of them is Maguire, who has reportedly been left out. He posted an emotional statement on social media in the wake of Tuchel’s bold decision.
Real Reason Why Thomas Tuchel Hasn’t Picked Harry Maguire
Maguire, who has 66 caps for his country, has battled his way back into the Man United XI and has starred at the back, becoming a crucial figure under Michael Carrick since he replaced Ruben Amorim, having started 14 of their last 16 Premier League matches.
He helped his team claim a Champions League spot this season and an England call-up was on the cards.
Maguire’s form led to his recall to the England fold in March. He impressed in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay and made an appearance as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Japan.
But the 33-year-old is set to watch England’s World Cup campaign from afar, with Tuchel believed to have snubbed him of a spot in his squad.
According to The Times, Maguire’s “ego” appears to be a reason behind his omission. The report claims that he would not have accepted going to the World Cup as a back-up player, with it adding that the player’s social media post “confirmed such fears”.
Jonathan Northcroft wrote: “Another reservation about Maguire appears to have been ego, that he would not accept going to the tournament as a back-up player. The defender’s very public airing, on social media, of his disappointment about being excluded may be taken by the Tuchel camp to have confirmed such fears. But what is wrong with big players having an ego?”
With no Maguire, Tuchel is expected to go with Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Manchester City duo Marc Guehi and John Stones.
Harry Maguire ‘Shocked and Gutted’ After England Snub
Maguire made his feelings very clear after Tuchel’s call. He shared a statement on social media, expressing his “shock” at being left out of the England squad.
“I was confident I could of played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,” he wrote.
“I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years.
“I wish the players, all the best this summer.”
Maguire’s mother, Zoe, also posted on social media to express her disappointment. She said she was “disgusted” by Tuchel’s decision.
His Man United teammate Luke Shaw is also set to be omitted.
