Indian court requests data on university violence from WhatsApp, Google
In today’s ruling, the Delhi Supreme Court asked Google and WhatsApp to store and provide data to the police about attacks by masked thugs on students at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
On January 5, a bunch of masked assailants entered the University of New Delhi and attacked students with staffs and destroyed items.
Justice Brijesh Sethi’s one-person bank asked for data from two specific groups: Unity Against Left and Friends of RSS. Screenshots of these groups, which were allegedly involved in organizing the attacks, appeared hours after the incident.
According to Live Law, Google agreed to the sharing of basic subscriber information and data stored on Google Drive. The cloud service is used to store backups of WhatsApp conversations.
WhatsApp, on the other hand, indicated that they can pass on basic IP-based information, but cannot pass on chat messages because they are encrypted:
t Share the content of the messages due to end-to-end encryption , It is no longer on our server as soon as it is delivered to the recipient.
The court also ordered the police to confiscate the phones of all 1
37 members of these groups as part of the evidence.
We asked WhatsApp, Google and Apple to provide more detailed information about the order and the information they provided to the authorities. We will update the story when we hear something from them.
